buzz buzz… word.

So after a long and drawn out public discussion about “Web 2.0” & “Social Media Expert” I have come to the conclusion that buzz words can just take a permanent leave of absence in my life and they won’t be missed. I don’t use them, I no longer want to hear them & they cause nothing but elitism and confusion for an subject. They work to stratify people, instead of help them work together & ultimately, rarely help define anything.

These trendy little tidbits are nothing helpful. Why do people cling to them? What substantive advantage do they bring? They help people that know nothing on a subject, string together complex and meaningless sentences. They hinder people that do know something into either using the confusing phrases & then have to explain them, or lose credibility with people for not using them. I see no gain. Who is pushing these worthless terms? Where do they come from?

I feel these abominations are actually formed from an over marketed society. We are so accustomed to being sold something, that we require any new information to be transformed into a catch phrase or one liner. If it isn’t, we ignore it as being too informational or not “new”. We don’t have time to sift through all the knowledge and info. There is too much moving at too quick a pace. “Just give me the down-low and I will be on my way. Oh and while I am getting the info, if it doesn’t have a hook quick enough, I will be on my way.” This is our attitude. We lack concentration, not because we are incapable, but because it isn’t plausible. Well if we want to keep up with everything it isn’t.

My RSS feed is way to full of unread items for me to sit around and read them all. And even if I was just sitting, reading it all day, 50% of it is trash I don’t like from a feed I do like. We are victims of a system that requires quick, efficient, work-free organization & it just isn’t out there.

So we do what any good, logical being would do. We categorize. Categorization is one of the most human things we do. It is at our core as beings. However, we are doing unconscious categorization, that is the root of the evil. Then throw in the capitalist way of life we are born into & BOOM! That wonderful categorization has misguided soil, uninformed sunlight & lazy water to grow & bloom into a tall and prominent flower. Where all the buzzing, drone bees come to draw the sweet nectar.

Recipe for disaster in my opinion. Something that we as a society are going to have to deal with in the near future. It is causing a stagnation in otherwise promising advancements.

Now I realize that what I have just written is going to sound incredibly jaded. I assure I write this not in distaste for those that take part in the cycle, because I am in it as well. I am not against making a buck, selling a good idea/product, or other common capitalist values. I do it for a living. What I am saying is this, isn’t there a better way to categorize these up and coming advancements in a less confusing way. Can’t we find a beneficial system for everyone?

I am a firm believer that information shouldn’t be sold. Education should be available to everyone. After that, go make your living. But we should all stand together when it comes to education. Only good things can come from it.
